Description
Bellorama was discovered after climbing at the neighbouring Bellavista crag. The view from this crag is similarly spectacular but the rock quality is much better. There are 7 routes at the moment which vary in grade from 5 to 7b. All routes are vertical with good friction and a different range of holds, predominantly crimps and pockets but you can also find some tufas.
Access Issues
Most crags enjoy easy access with short walk-ins, and most are accessible by bus. Be careful not to cross farmlands without permission.
Approach
Abseil In: Drive past Mellieħa Bay and towards Ċirkewwa and take the left exit onto the road which leads to the Red Tower. Follow that road until the very end where you will find a Radar Station. You can park here (35°58'18.3"N 14°19'28.9"E). Walk 100m directly south to find 2 abseil points 1 of which is the top of the Via Ferrata.
Walk In (25min approach): Drive past Mellieħa Bay heading north and at the round-about take the 1st exit (straight ahead direction Ċirkewwa). Almost immediately, after just 30m take the (1st) exit to the left following signs for ‘It-Torri l-Aħmar’ (the Red Tower). Drive about 800m past the Red Tower and park here, just before the road bends slightly to the right. To your left you will find a staircase that descends through the cliff. As the staircase ends keep heading downhill and after about 100m turn right at the T-junction. Follow the coastal cliff track through a picturesque agricultural area for about 1km with Bellavista and later Bellorama up to your right.
Exiting: To exit the crag (if you didn’t walk in), you can either climb the 1st route on the left ‘Escape from Reality’ which is the easiest route of the crag at 5b or you can use the Via Ferrata line a little further left.
Ethic
Don't bolt here. There is a well established climbing community. If you seek to add routes contact either Climb MT (UIAA affiliated) or the Malta Rock Climbing Club in Malta, or Stevie Haston in Gozo. All new routes are now being equipped with titanium bolts and anchors.
